About this work
Dozens of nearly identical young women's faces and half-figures repeat and overlap across the sheet, heads tilted back or bowed, eyes closed, hands raised or pressed near their faces as if joining in song; thin vertical drip-like lines run down through the composition, threading the layered figures together.
Rendered mainly in graphite pencil, the drawing builds soft, smoky gradations of gray with occasional crisp linear detail in hair and hands; the repeated, semi-transparent faces merge into a single choral mass, giving the sheet a hushed, dreamlike, almost hypnotic rhythm.
