About this work
A shirtless man sits above a group of children, mouth open and eyes rolled upward as if caught mid-song, one hand raised, the other open before him. Around his knees, children of different ages press close, touching his hands and legs, while a boxer dog looks out from among them. Isolated flowers float across the black background behind them.
Flesh tones are built in warm ochre and pink against the dark patterned clothing of the children — stripes, polka dots, a mustard sweater — while the black ground is punctuated by flatly painted blossoms in red, blue, yellow and pink. Faces are smooth and modeled, while the flowers read as decorative pattern. The effect is intense and dreamlike.
