About this work

A group of four figures wrapped in orange and red robes gathers on a dark shore beside the exposed ribbed hull of a beached boat. Two raise their arms skyward, one points upward, and a seated figure cradles a round stringed instrument. Two bare masts or poles rise beside the wreck, and a solid rust-colored rock face closes off the right side of the scene.

Turbulent teal-blue clouds swirl across the left half of the canvas, pushing against the warm orange rock face on the right, and the group's pale faces catch what little light there is. Paint is applied in thick, urgent strokes, and the raised arms and upturned faces give the scene an intense, almost ritual charge.
