About this work
The scene shows a cramped, dated bathroom: an open toilet and pedestal sink stand against a mint-green wall stained with damp and peeling patches, a drum-shaped mirror hangs on a cord above the toilet, and a small framed mirror and toothbrush holder sit between them. To the right, a green bathtub with a shower hose, a wood stump stool holding a blue basin, and a black plastic bag and toilet brush complete the cramped corner, all set on red terracotta tiles.
Painted in cool greens and whites against warm ochre tiles, the scene is rendered with meticulous, near-photographic detail in the reflections of chrome taps and the grain of the tiled floor. Even light flattens the small space, and the clutter of worn fixtures gives the interior a lived-in, faintly melancholic ordinariness.
