About this work
Broad, curling leaves in ochre, blue-green and pink frame a pale greenish human face peering from the foliage, evoking the bird-woman of Slavic legend. Below, a dark glass bottle holds the branch on a black surface scattered with dried physalis husks and a small iridescent shell, while a torn parchment with old Cyrillic script fills the upper corner.
A saturated red ground intensifies the cooler greens and blues of the leaves and face by contrast, while the bottle is painted in deep, near-black glass tones with reflective highlights. Textured, layered brushwork and flattened forms give the still life a symbolic, folkloric undertone reinforced by the archaic lettering.
