About this work
A wide, still river occupies the lower portion of the composition beneath a long embankment lined with buildings. A reddish-pink structure with a row of windows stands out among paler neighboring facades, with dark trees and low structures continuing along the bank while the sky above takes up more than half the canvas.
The palette is soft and muted, dominated by warm rose and ochre in the buildings against a sky of pale lilac, grey and blue washes. Paint is applied thinly and loosely, blurring detail and letting sky and water dominate, creating a calm, unhurried view of the waterfront.
