Short summer night

A white horned creature, goat-like with a spiraling horn, wears a wreath of flowers and nuzzles a bearded man and woman folded together inside a red hooded cloak embroidered with a tiny walled town. At right a nude woman with a wolf's head and clawed feet stands among purple blossoms. At lower left a boy figure and a bowed dark-haired man appear half-hidden, and a small parrot guards a nest of eggs in the corner.

Warm reds, ochres, and dusky pinks dominate against a shadowy brown-green thicket at left. Richly detailed brushwork picks out embroidery, fur, and feathers with fine linear highlights, giving the crowded, jewel-like scene an ornate, fairy-tale atmosphere, dense and dreamlike rather than naturalistic.
