About this work
A wide river fills the lower half of the composition, its dark surface reflecting faint light along the waterline. Across the water a low embankment stretches with indistinct buildings, trees and small figures, culminating on the right in the silhouetted domes and towers of a church against the sky.
The sky is painted in soft washes of pale green, gold and grey, suggesting early morning or evening light. Brushwork throughout is loose and blended, with forms dissolving into haze rather than being sharply defined. The muted, atmospheric palette gives the view a quiet, contemplative calm.
