The scene depicts a museum display of classical marble sculpture: a central group of two entwined nude male figures wrestling on a plinth, one gripping the other's head, with additional statues and a bust glimpsed at the edges of the frame. The sculptures are shown at close range, filling most of the canvas against a plain interior wall.

The figures are rendered almost entirely in greys and whites to mimic the sheen of marble, with dark drips and stains running down the stone surfaces, while the wall behind glows in deep oxidized red. The contrast between cool grisaille sculpture and warm background, combined with loose, painterly drips, gives the scene a hushed, museum-like solemnity.
