About this work
A reclining, toga-draped male figure sits with one leg raised and an arm resting on his knee, rendered as if carved from pale stone. To his left, a separate pedestal holds a weathered horse's head, its ear and mane chipped as though broken from a larger relief, both set against a dark, mottled green ground.
Modeled almost entirely in grays and off-whites with heavy black shadow, the figures are built up with visible scratches and dry brushwork that mimic the pitted surface of ancient marble. The murky green backdrop, flecked and uneven, suggests a dim gallery or garden setting, giving the pairing of broken sculptures a hushed, museum-like stillness.
