About this work
A dense green tree grows from a corner of a stone embankment, its trunk and canopy dominating the left side of the composition. Behind it, a shallow stone arch bridge crosses the canal, backed by a pale ochre building with a pink roofline. The canal water in the foreground is calm, mirroring the tree, bridge and stonework in soft, broken reflections.
The palette is built from muted creams, dusty pinks and blue-greys of stone and sky, set against the saturated green of the foliage. Thick, gestural strokes and visible knife marks give the stonework a weathered, textured surface, while the water is rendered in loose horizontal touches. The overall mood is quiet and airy, an intimate urban riverside view.
