About this work
A cluster of whitewashed farm buildings with red-brown roofs sits on a rise above a broad, hazy valley, framed by a leafy tree beside the houses. Diagonal streaks scored across the sky and hillside render falling rain, while the foreground field glows in warm ochre and ochre-green tones.
Soft pastel and oil are layered together, the rain rendered as scratched, dragged lines cutting through muted green and grey washes. The damp, overcast light and blurred distance give the farm a quiet, melancholic stillness.
