About this work
A bearded man is shown from the chest up, bare-shouldered, with long tangled hair and beard in shades of blond and grey falling past his chin. His head is tilted slightly down while his pale blue eyes look up and out at the viewer with a fixed, penetrating stare, one side of his face lit and the other sunk in deep shadow.
The face and beard are built from thick, dragged strokes of ochre, rust and gold, set against a near-black ground streaked with red and dark green. Strong, raking light carves out the brow and cheekbones while the surrounding paint stays loose and unblended, giving the head a weathered, almost fierce presence.
