About this work
A dancer is caught in a deep, diagonal stretch, one leg extended far behind in a pointe shoe while the other bends beneath her for support. Her torso leans forward and down, arm reaching toward the floor, head tucked low. The figure occupies the full width of the small panel against a bare, neutral ground.
The palette stays close to grayish beige and white, with only faint touches of blue marking shadow and the pointe shoe's ribbon. Paint is applied thinly and rapidly, blurring the contours of limbs and torso into the surrounding light. The economy of means and the strained, athletic pose convey the physical effort of a rehearsal exercise.
