About this work
A pale, elongated face with minimal, flattened features looks out from beneath a dark hooded cloak that fills the lower half of the composition. To the left a small white house sits under a pale sky, while a second figure with reddish hair appears partly turned away at the lower edge, and warm brown drapery or rock forms fill the right side.
The sky is laid in soft, streaked strokes of blue-grey and white, while the face is built from smooth, simplified patches of grey, cream and rose with little modelling. The plain, muted palette and blank expression give the portrait a quiet, enigmatic detachment.
