About this work
At upper left, a woman's face rests on her raised hand inside a round, mirror-like frame, her features softly modeled. Below and to the right spreads a table set with two red cups and saucers, a metallic pitcher, and a tall copper samovar catching warm light along its ridged surface.
Heavy impasto strokes swirl outward from the face in ochre, rust and dull green, applied thickly with a palette knife. Warm, diffuse light unifies figure and objects, while the thick, agitated brushwork and rough surface texture give the composition an intense, almost feverish presence.
