About this work
A seagull is shown in profile atop a dark, roughly hatched mound, its near wing rendered as a heavy black mass suggesting injury. Behind the bird, soft cloud forms billow upward, and below, on the ground, an old tobacco pipe lies discarded, a thin curling line of smoke drifting up until it dissolves into the same cloud shapes above. Handwritten text beneath the image reads "Broken wing of a Seagull, abandoned pipe."
Fine crosshatched linework in black ink against toned grey paper builds soft, looping strokes for the clouds and smoke, contrasted with dense parallel hatching on the bird's body. The pairing of a wounded gull and a forgotten pipe, joined visually by the shared smoke and cloud, produces a quiet, elegiac atmosphere.
