San Gimignano

A hill town crowned with tall medieval towers spreads across the ridge, its clustered stone and ochre buildings rising above dark cypress trees. Below, terraced hillsides fall away in a patchwork of cultivated fields and orchards, with a pale country road curving through the valley toward a small yellow house. A broad expanse of blue sky opens above the rooftops.

Bold pastel strokes in saturated green, rust and violet build the terrain in flat, almost mosaic-like patches, while the town itself is rendered more loosely in soft pinks and greys. Strong sunlight and long cast shadows from the cypresses give the hillside a vivid, sun-warmed rhythm and an airy, open feeling.
