About this work
A weathered stone church front fills the composition, its pilasters, cornices, and a triangular pediment rising into a strip of pale sky at upper right. A carved statue of a saint stands in a shell-topped niche directly above a small arched doorway, with a second doorway and pilaster visible at left and worn paving stretching across the foreground.
Rendered almost monochromatically in ochre, umber, and grey-brown, the facade is built from broad, dragged brushstrokes that leave the canvas weave showing through in places. Touches of white pick out the statue and sunlit cornice edges, giving the study a quiet, sun-warmed stillness typical of an on-site architectural sketch.
