About this work
A domed cathedral with a bell tower rises at the left and a second, larger dome appears further back at the right, above low waterside buildings and a bridge that spans a dark canal in the foreground, with small dark accents suggesting figures along the embankment.
The palette is almost monochrome amber, ochre and burnt sienna, applied in thick impasto with a palette knife so the architecture dissolves into abstracted patches of light and shadow; the heavy texture and glowing warm tone give the cityscape a hazy, dreamlike glow, as if seen through a haze of low sun.
