About this work

A figure in a multicolored harlequin suit, tasseled fur-trimmed collar, and voluminous red cape walks in profile down a narrow cobblestone street between old townhouses, head tipped down so long hair swings forward. A trombone is cradled in the crook of one arm, and small balloons and a carnival mask lie scattered on the stones behind.

Cool blue-grey buildings and a pale moon set off the costume's warm reds, greens, and golds, painted with crisp, decorative precision in the diamond pattern against softer, atmospheric handling of the street and sky. The bowed posture and muted evening light give the otherwise festive costume a quiet, melancholic air.
