About this work
A uniformed sailor holds a young woman close at the center of the deck, her head resting against his shoulder. Around them the scene fills with fragments of other crew: striped-shirted legs on a ladder, a hand ringing the ship's bell, and a boy peering over a rope barrier with binoculars in hand.
Cool blue-grey and white dominate the metal deck and uniforms, warmed by flesh tones and a blue ship number stenciled at left. Forms are simplified and rounded, modeled with smooth, even light and soft outlines in a stylized, decorative manner, lending the farewell embrace a tender, wistful mood.
