About this work
A fair-haired child leans on one hand at the center of a wooden cabinet stacked with wire cages holding finches, an owl, a green parrot, a gull and other songbirds, along with a single white egg and a hanging key. One small bird perches on the child's outstretched fingers, and the child's clothing is built from geometric panels of muted color.
Earthy browns, greys and golds dominate the wooden structure, set against bursts of red, blue, green and yellow in the birds' plumage. The child's face is smoothly modeled and softly lit, contrasting with the faceted, mosaic-like body and the flatter, decorative birds and cages. The mood is quiet and wistful, suggesting gentle melancholy.
