About this work
The Vittoriano's pale colonnade, staircases and balustrades emerge behind a row of tall umbrella pines whose trunks form a dark silhouette across the width of the picture. Bronze quadriga groups and a winged figure crown the roofline, while a low stone balustrade and gate close off the foreground.
Built almost entirely from cool violets, blues and chalky whites, the pastel is worked in dense, layered strokes that make the marble glow faintly against the darker foliage and sky. The contrast between luminous stone and near-black trees gives the piece a hushed, crepuscular mystery.
