About this work
The composition frames a plain stuccoed building wall broken by a grid of windows and a vertical drainpipe. A single lit window at the center reveals a warmly lit room with a hanging lampshade, a houseplant, and glimpses of furniture and framed pictures, while a second, dimmer window to the right shows another shadowed interior. The rest of the facade lies in flat, undifferentiated dusk-blue shade.
Pastel is applied in broad, even planes for the cool grey-blue exterior, reserving warm orange, ochre, and red strokes for the glowing interior visible through the glass. The stark contrast between the flat cool wall and the softly modeled, colorful room creates a hushed evening mood centered on the single patch of domestic light.
