About this work
A white domed church with a bell-shaped cupola stands at center, flanked by a slender column topped with a statue at left and tiers of aged ochre and pink apartment buildings at right. A paved path with faintly sketched figures runs across the foreground, leading toward the cluster of Roman rooftops behind.
Pastel is applied in soft, rubbed layers of putty, rose and grey, keeping light even and diffused as under a pale overcast sky. Architectural edges are loosely stated rather than sharply drawn, and the restrained, earthy palette gives the ancient quarter a hushed, timeworn calm.
