About this work
The center panel is filled with a tangle of pale nude bodies, men and women overlapping and sinking through dark water beneath the hull of a wooden boat crossing overhead. The left wing shows a row of blackened, leafless tree trunks over scorched earth, while the right wing shows a wooded rock cliff under a paler sky, both framing the drowned figures below.
Deep browns, greens and near-black dominate all three panels, with the bodies picked out in warm ivory and flesh tones that catch a dim light from above. Paint is built up thickly around the figures and rocks, thinning to smoky washes in the burnt trees, giving the triptych a heavy, funereal weight.
