About this work
The composition isolates the back panel of a piano, reduced to a grid of vertical boards, hinges, and a small brass latch. No keyboard or instrument front is shown - only the plain reverse side, its joints, screws and worn edges arranged as overlapping rectangles and diagonal cuts.
The surface is built from scraped, scratched layers of grey, black, ochre and rust, with fine incised lines cutting through the paint to reveal lighter ground beneath. Handling is rough and textural rather than descriptive, closer to abstraction than still life, cool and impersonal in feeling.
