About this work
A woman in a long dark coat stands in a doorway, wrapping both arms around a boy who presses his face into her shoulder. He wears a bulky, fur-trimmed coat; she wears a fringed scarf and long blue skirt. A tall riveted plank door rises behind them, with a hazy glowing horizon visible through the gap at left.
Deep blues and browns dominate the doorway and figures, pierced by warm gold light spilling in from outside. The paint is built with visible, weathered texture on the door's metal straps, softer modeling on the faces and hands. The huddled, sheltering pose and the contrast between cold shadow and distant warm light give the reunion a hushed, emotional weight.
