About this work
A tall, dark reddish-brown form dominates the left side, its surface streaked with dripping red pigment, set against a diagonal band of bright yellow-white light. In the lower right corner a small ornate bottle with a red stopper sits half in shadow, while the rest of the canvas dissolves into loose patches of green, grey, and ochre with no clear setting.
Thick, loaded strokes and visible palette-knife marks build a rough, tactile texture in the dark central mass and the streak of red. Sharp contrast between the murky earth tones and the bright diagonal light gives the scene a charged, uncertain atmosphere. Recognizable form gives way to gesture and color, leaving an impression rather than a description.
