About this work
A steep red-shingled roofline and gable, rendered with fine black outline, rise behind clusters of dark green shrubs and a small red garden bench tucked into the greenery. The buildings and path are cropped high in the frame, perched above a broad, curving grey retaining wall that sweeps diagonally across the lower two-thirds of the picture, crossed by two thin power lines.
Flat red fields outlined in black brushwork contrast with loosely dabbed, textured greens for the foliage, while the broad concrete wall is built from dry, scraped strokes of grey and violet-grey. The clash between the flat, graphic red-and-green village vignette and the heavy textured mass of stone below gives the image a bright, slightly stark graphic energy.
