About this work
A large creature with a hawk's head and crowned brow, its bare human torso strung with beaded necklaces and its body feathered like a bird of prey, dominates the lower two-thirds of the canvas. Behind it, a rainbow arcs over a cluster of pale human figures huddled together with raised hands, while at the bottom a pair of clawed hands rests on the head of a woman with closed eyes emerging from dark water.
Cool jade greens, teal and midnight blue run through the foliage and figures alike, broken by warm pink and gold accents in the rainbow and jewelry. Built up in thick, textured strokes with fine linear detail in the feathers and faces, the painting creates a dense, hallucinatory fantasy scene, quiet and strange rather than menacing.
