About this work
A nude woman lies stretched across the canvas upside down, her face ringed by wavy strands of orange-red hair like flames or a sunburst. Her arms reach out to either side over a bright ground, and above her floating stylized shapes recall a flame, a shell and a burst of rays. Below, distant hills, a cypress tree and rooftops complete a small landscape strip.
Her skin is rendered in hot coral and vermilion outlined with pale contour lines, set against the cooler blues and greens of the painted landscape band. Heavy outlines and flattened, patterned shapes give the figure a mythic, otherworldly presence, while the fiery palette lends the whole scene a charged, radiant intensity.
