Queen of flies

A broad, dotted wing- or shell-like form spreads across the center, its surface covered in fine scale-like patterning. Above it a round tan disc marked with concentric brown rings sits at upper right, while a small striped, lizard-like creature perches at upper left; rows of speckled oval pods line the lower edge.

The composition is built almost entirely from deep maroon, rust brown, grey and cream, with every form filled by dense stippling and fine linear hatching rather than blended tone. Flat, shadowless lighting and the insect-like scale patterning give the small canvas a close, entomological intensity, as if magnifying a single specimen.
