About this work
A row of slender cypress trees, rendered almost entirely in violet and magenta, stands at the center of a hillside orchard; smaller trees with white-pink blossoms line a pale path leading from the foreground into the distance, where further cypresses and rolling fields fade beneath a pale disc of sun or moon.
The whole scene is keyed to a single lavender-purple harmony, broken only by touches of ochre and a small warm flare at the base of the trees; thick impasto and visible palette-knife ridges give the foliage a tactile, sculptural texture, producing a saturated, dreamlike vision of the countryside.
