About this work
A young ballet dancer in a deep purple leotard sits on the edge of a draped table, twisting to reach down with one hand while her other rests on her waist. Behind her a second dancer in a dark leotard is turned away, and above them a pair of pointe shoes hangs against the pale wall of what reads as a rehearsal or dressing room.
The muted grey-green backdrop is built from soft, dragged brushstrokes that leave the setting vague, throwing emphasis onto the dancer's illuminated face, arms and the rich purple of her leotard. Warm flesh tones and cool background greys are set in loose, gestural touches, giving the portrait an unposed, momentary feel, as if caught between exercises.
