About this work
The close-up view is filled with the tackle of a trawler's deck: heavy fishing nets strung with round wooden floats hang from mast and rigging, ropes crisscross in front of the dark hull, and a red-and-white lifebuoy rests against the rail at lower left. A sailor stands further back near the stern, small against the ship's dark superstructure and a pale, overcast sky.
Brown, ochre and grey dominate the weathered wood, rope and canvas, set against the near-white sky and the ship's black hull. The paint is applied in quick, broken strokes that catch the texture of tarred rope and rough netting rather than smoothing it away, giving the scene an unpolished, workaday harbor atmosphere.
