About this work
A seated woman is shown from the chest up, her head bowed so her face is largely lost in a mass of loose, tangled hair gathered at the back. Her bare shoulders and torso catch light against an almost black surrounding space, while wisps of hair and paint spatter extend beyond the silhouette into the dark.
The hair is built from thick, encrusted ridges of gold, ochre, red, and white paint applied with a palette knife, alongside scattered drips of stray color. The body emerges from shadow through a few broad, pale strokes, anatomy loosely suggested rather than described. The rough surface and stark light-dark contrast give the figure a raw, unfinished intensity.
