About this work
Shown in profile with an elaborate rounded headdress and a narrow domino mask over one eye, a woman in a sculpted white ballgown cradles an open red pomegranate in her raised hand. Behind her rises the stone arch of a Rialto-like bridge, its reflection doubled in the water, flanked by rows of shuttered palazzo windows.
The palette is almost monochrome — bone white, ochre and taupe — broken only by the pomegranate's saturated red and the sitter's matching lips. Thick, plaster-like texture across the dress and stonework contrasts with the smooth, mask-like modeling of the face, giving the image a still, enigmatic quality.
