About this work
A quiet street corner is shown at night: an ornate building with a balcony on the left, and an empty roadway curving away toward a canal bridge marked by a cast-iron obelisk and lamp. In the foreground a solitary cat sits upright on the paving stones, facing the viewer.
The etching builds its nocturnal mood through dense, swirling hatching in the sky, broken by a pale round moon, while the building facade is left comparatively open and luminous. Fine, wiry lines describe cobbles, ironwork and the cat's fur alike, giving the deserted scene a hushed, watchful stillness.
