About this work
A round plate holding what looks like sliced bread or fish sits at left beside an empty wine glass and a squat glass vase; a loosely painted pink and red bouquet rises behind them and a second plate curves into view at lower right. Everything rests on a heavily folded pink cloth that dominates the foreground.
The whole surface is built from thick, palette-knife impasto in lilac, mauve, dusty pink and pale green, with the tablecloth's ridges catching cool grey highlights. Forms are suggested rather than drawn, dissolving into abstracted patches of color, and the soft, even light gives the composition a quiet, serene stillness.
