About this work
Several bearded, elderly men are drawn walking together in profile, their bodies overlapping so closely that torsos and coats merge into one dense mass. Bare feet and legs emerge at the bottom of the group, suggesting motion and effort, while their heads, topped with caps or unruly hair, crowd together at the upper edge of the sheet.
Dense cross-hatched ink strokes model the huddled figures against a soft sandy-grey wash, with spatters of ink scattered around the group. The heavy, overlapping linework and muted earth tones give the scene a weary, somber rhythm, as if the figures are pressing forward under a shared burden.
