About this work
Steeply pitched slate roofs, tall brick chimneys and a colonnaded stone building with arched windows and clipped conical hedges fill the upper half of the composition. In the courtyard below, a small bronze fountain figure stands on a pedestal, and a man in a pale coat walks with a dog across the pebbled ground.
The entire surface is built from countless small, dabbed strokes of blue, pink, green and grey in a pointillist technique, giving the stonework and sky a shimmering, granular texture. The diffused, even light and dense stippling create a quiet, contemplative Parisian courtyard scene.
