About this work
Two young women stand shoulder to shoulder indoors, each wrapped in a floral headscarf, one in deep green and rose tones, the other in bright red. Both hold large bundles of budding pussy-willow twigs against their chests, one raising a stem to inspect it, while the pair gaze off to the side in quiet stillness.
Warm ochre and umber tones in the wall and drapery set off the cool greys of the willow twigs and the saturated red and green of the shawls. Brushwork on the faces is smooth and closely observed, while the willow branches are rendered in quick, dry strokes, lending the scene a hushed, reverent calm.
