About this work
A white stone gatehouse with two dark tented roofs and small onion domes topped by crosses spans two arched passages closed with wooden lattice gates. Scattered stones and grass fill the foreground, a larger whitewashed building with a pitched roof stands to the right, and trees rise behind against a clear blue sky.
Strong sunlight rakes across the walls, carving deep blue-violet shadows into the stucco and picking out warm ochre highlights. Thick, visible brushstrokes give the stonework a rough, sun-baked texture. The bright contrast and clear color lend the scene a crisp, sunlit stillness.
