About this work

A larger, paler owl stands beside a smaller, warmer-toned companion, both perched on a whitish branch or log at the base of the canvas. Their round, disc-shaped faces and dark button eyes face slightly outward, wings folded close against softly modeled bodies, feet gripping the perch with visible talons.

Painted in close tonal harmony of ivory, buff and dove grey, the owls are modeled with smooth, simplified volumes and only subtle textured strokes suggesting feathers. The flat, mottled background reads as an abstracted dusk, giving the pair a still, watchful presence and an air of quiet mystery.
