About this work

A hooded, bearded old man sits astride an enormous boar, one hand gripping its bristled back and the other holding a length of chain. At the animal's tusked head, a nude figure with long braided hair kneels low, one arm curved around its snout, the other reaching toward clay jars and metal tools scattered on the ground.

Dense charcoal hatching builds the animal's coarse hide against bare, untouched paper, while looser gestural strokes render heavy drapery and tightly controlled shading models the nude figure's anatomy. Strong tonal contrast and a folkloric grouping of man, beast, and figure give the drawing a mysterious, fable-like atmosphere.
