About this work
Two weathered wooden mooring posts stand in the foreground of a wide river, their bases washed by rippling grey-blue water. Gulls wheel and skim low over the surface, while a golden-domed building and a row of low waterside structures line the far embankment under an overcast sky.
The water is built from broken, horizontal strokes of grey, blue and warm ochre reflections, while the distant shoreline is rendered more softly in muted golds and browns. The restrained, atmospheric palette and choppy brushwork evoke the damp, breezy calm of an overcast day on the river.
