About this work
The sheet is filled with a tight close-up of an elderly man's head, his brow furrowed and eyes narrowed beneath heavy dark lids. Wild strands of tangled hair frame the face on both sides and continue into a long beard that trails down toward the lower edge of the paper, giving the figure a stern, weathered presence.
Executed almost entirely in black ink over bare cream paper, the drawing relies on broad, dripping strokes and dry-brush hatching rather than fine outline, leaving raw drips and pooled ink caught in the beard. The stark contrast between untouched paper and dense black passages gives the head a rough, urgent energy, reading as a study of age and character.
