About this work
Several tall, leafless birches rise in the foreground of a snow-covered field, their thin trunks and sparse dark twigs silhouetted against a pale blue-grey sky. Long shadows stretch across the snow toward the viewer, and a low line of small buildings and bushes is visible on the horizon beyond an open expanse of white.
The palette is limited to cool blues, violets and warm-toned browns for the bark, applied in confident, economical strokes that read as a quick plein-air study. Crisp trunks stand out against the softly blended sky and snow, and the low winter light gives the scene a clear, quietly serene stillness.
